Distribution of Rubidium-86 Accumulated in the Rabbit Lens

BERNARD BECKER 1 and EDWARD COTLIER 1

1 Department of Ophthalmology and the Oscar Johnson Institute, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo.

Rabbit lenses were dissected after incubation in vitro in a simplified medium containing Rb-86. The earliest accumulation and highest accumulation ratios of Rb-86 were found in areas closest to the epithelium. This accumulation could be inhibited by ouabain in concentrations similar to those reported for the Na-K ATPase of lens epithelium.
