Theory and Calibration of the Schiøtz Tonometer

I. The Boundary Surface of the Cornea

ROBERT A. MOSES 1

1 Department of Ophthalmology, Washington University School of Medicine 660 South Euclid, Saint Louis, Mo. 63110

Previous theoretical treatment of the Schiøtz tonometer assumed the posterior corneal surface to be the surface of reference. Experimental results indicate that in indentation tonometry the strain-bearing surface of the cornea, and hence the surface of reference, lies anteriorly.

Key Words: tonography • indentation tonometry • Schiøtz tonometer • calibration • corneal surface
