Theory and Calibration of the Schiøtz Tonometer

V. A Mathematical Model of Schiøtz Tonometry: The Volume of Indentation

ROBERT A. MOSES 1

1 Department of Ophthalmology, Washington University School of Medicine, 660 South Euclid, Saint Louis, Mo. 63110

Volume of the corneal indentation of the tonometer is calculated from a geometrical model. Corneal curvature radius has exceedingly little effect on the relationship between scale reading and calculated volume. The calculated indentation volume is less than the experimentally measured volume.

Key Words: Corneal indentation • calculated indentation volume • scale reading • corneal curvature
