The molecular structure of ionophores or carriers for lens K+ or Rb+ appears remarkably similar to that of valinomycin. This antibiotic stimulated the Rb86 transport into the efflux from the rabbit lens. Similar observations have been previously made in red blood cells, mitochondria, and lipid bilayer membranes.
