The Fine Structure of the Cornea in Fuchs' Endothelial Dystrophy

The electron microscopic appearance of normal human cornea is described. The changes from the normal in Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy are shown in electron micrographs. The endothelium becomes thin and, distorted, in shape and filled, with vacuoles. Descemet's membrane becomes markedly thickened, changes its smooth surface, and, its component ultrastructural units become distinctly different. The course of these changes is charted and, an attempt is made to correlate them with the light microscopic appearance and the pathophysiology involved.
