A Hue Discrimination Defect in so-called Normal Carriers of Color Vision Defects

The Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test was used to study 13 carriers of color vision defects. All carriers were found to be normal with the H-R-R and Ishihara pseudoisochromatic plates. Fifty normal subjects were used as the control group. The carriers showed a significantly poorer performance than the normal control group (p < .0005). The increase in errors in carriers was concentrated in the area of poorest performance of normal subjects. The performance of each subject was also related to age (p < .005). The status of carriers of sex-linked recessive defects is best explained by the recently advanced single X chromosome inactivation hypothesis.
