Chorioretinal Vascular Occlusions with Latex Spheres

Latex microspheres of known size have been used to create occlusions in the chorioretinal vasculature of the dog eye. Histologic study of these eyes has shown that capillary occlusion in the nerve fiber layer is sufficient for the production of cytoid body lesions. Occlusion of the choriocapillaris vessels results in overlying retinal ischemia manifested by atrophy and necrosis of the external retinal layers. Large vessel occlusion of the choroid did not lead to retinal changes during the time course of this study.
