Glass microemboli (ballotini) were introduced into the retinal arteries of animals via carotid injection. Fluorescein angiograms were taken to ascertain the state of the retinal circulation and they revealed that collateral circulation may ensue rapidly and re-establish blood flow in an occluded area. The relationship of occlusion to retinal edema and "cotton-wool" spots was also studied
