Characterization of the Transport of Neutral Amino Acids by the Calf Lens

A number of selective sites have been found in the calf lens at which cellular transport of the neutral amino acids takes place. The characterization of two of these, the A-site and the Lsite, agrees with that of Christensen for these sites in other tissues. The existence of a third, site, X, was also demonstrated. The X-site was selective for the small amino acids, glycine and sarcosine, and alanine to a lesser extent. Most of the entry of the neutral amino acids occurred at these sites, with the residual or so-called unsaturable component usually constituting a small proportion of the total cellular uptake.
