Cover: Image of a transverse section through the retrobulbar optic nerve (left eye, approximately 2 mm posterior to the globe) of a rhesus macaque monkey with the newly identified condition "idiopathic bilateral optic atrophy." The section was stained with toluidine blue and imaged on a light microscope using a 5 X objective. The image is a montage of smaller portions composed in Adobe Photoshop. Toluidine blue normally stains the myelin sheaths of axons; this optic nerve shows severe regional degeneration within the temporal sector corresponding to the papillomacular axon bundles, including reduction of axonal density, shrunken fascicles and advanced gliosis. The horizontal diameter is also reduced as compared to normal. Please see Fortune et al. on page 3943 of this issue.
